storage for kids' stuff

My kids are pretty spaced out in age. I have two teenage boys, a 7 year old boy and a sweet toddler for a girl. I spend a small fortune buying the kids the things that they want so I want to be sure to get as much use out of it all as possible. My blog is all about using a storage unit to keep things around the house organized and keep your kids interested in the toys that you have spent your money on. You will find tips for storing clothes to be handed down to the younger kids and so much more.

Tips For Using An Outdoor Storage Unit

Blog

If you need to use a storage unit to store some of your belongings, you're likely considering all your options. An outdoor storage unit can be a great choice if you are looking to save money. Here are some tips for using an outdoor self-storage unit that will be helpful for first-time storage unit renters.

You Won't Have Climate Controls

The biggest downside to using an outdoor storage unit is that the units typically do not have the option for climate controls. This may or may not be a big deal for you, which depends on what you are storing in the unit. If the items you are storing are not affected by heat or humidity, then you can save money by selecting an outdoor storage unit and know that everything will be safe.

However, be aware of what can become damaged while it is in storage. Wood items can expand and contract under the extreme hot and cold temperatures. Electronic components can corrode due to humidity causing moisture to collect on the inside of the devices. Items with leather can crack and require you to condition the leather to protect it.

You Should Raise Things Off The Floor

An outdoor storage unit gives you the advantage of having the ability to drive your vehicle right up to the unit for unloading and retrieving items. One thing to keep in mind is that your storage unit's door is also directly exposed to the weather outside. If there was a situation where there was an extreme downpour that came through town that caused flooding, you may have water seep into the bottom of your storage unit.

It's a good idea to raise items off the floor to ensure that nothing gets damaged if flooding were to happen. An easy way to do this is to track down unused pallets that can line the bottom of the storage unit, creating a floor that raises everything off the floor just enough to protect it from water. Can't find pallets? Consider putting down some 2x4 boards and plywood to provide the same protection. You can also purchase shelves to place things on to keep them off the floor and easy to reach.

Now that you are aware of these tips for using an outdoor storage unit, you can save money while making sure that your items are protected. Reach out to your storage unit provider for more tips about using your unit.
